Üzülmez was born to a family of farmers in İzmit, Turkey, and would often sneak out of his farmer duties to play football with friends. His dream was always to play for Beşiktaş J.K., listening to all their matches on the radio. At age 16, he was spotted playing in Gönen, and impressed passers-by called in scouts. Gönenspor signed him immediately, and after one year he moved to Karabükspor. Following his national military service, he signed for Gaziantepspor, his first major professional team, staying for 1.5 years. When the transfer season opened, Beşiktaş came knocking, making his dream a reality. He shined in the 2002–03 season and was selected for the Turkey national team. After Sergen Yalçın's departure and Tümer Metin's shock signing with rivals Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş named Üzülmez its new captain in 2006. His performance against Barcelona in the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League group stage is still remembered, helping his team to a famous 3–0 win. In June 2008, he had a serious accident returning from Antalya holidays with his family: he hit another car in Manisa and then collided with a tree, but came out safe. During the 2010–11 season, a fiery quarrel with teammate İbrahim Toraman in the dressing room at half-time of a league game against MKE Ankaragücü led to his contract being terminated by unanimous board decision. The press commonly announced that Üzülmez lashed out a few punches on Toraman's head, and Toraman remained unresponsive until other team members intervened. Club chairman Yıldırım Demirören arranged a press release alongside Üzülmez, remarking that he was one of the important figures in Beşiktaş history and that his memory would always be cherished. The chairman added that all of Üzülmez's receivables should be paid in a single sum immediately. It is widely believed the fight had preceding roots in a 2008 pre-season camp in Austria, known as the "slipper fight," where Üzülmez asked Toraman why he came to lunch with slippers while all other players wore sports equipment, and they clenched fists. On 5 July 2011, Üzülmez retired from professional football. In October 2019, he took over as coach of TFF First League side Çaykur Rizespor, agreeing a contract until the end of the season.
